This tutorial will go through how to config WordPress + Gmail SMTP server to send WordPress site’s emails for free. 

There are two main steps:

• Install Post SMTP WordPress plugin
• Config Google Gmail API

Install Post SMTP WordPress plugin

POST SMTP Mailer – Email log, Delivery Failure Notifications and Best Mail SMTP for WordPress

Go to “Show All settings”

and Write Down Content in “Website Domain” and “Redirect URI”, these will be used in Google Could Console Credentials Config. “Client ID” and “Client Secret” will be generated from Google Cloud Console Project “Create Credentials” Setup, fill those in after complete following Gmail API Config step.

Config Google Gmail API

Go to Google Developer Console and Create a new Project

Enable API and Services -> Search “Gmail” and Enable Gmail API

Create Credentials

This is to create OAuth Credentials “Client Id” and “Client Secret” to use by the WordPress POST SMTP Plugin in the step above.

Select “OAuth Client ID” and then “Application Type” -> “Web Application”

Authorized JavaScript Origins: [ add “Website domain” data in SMTP Plugin Config from above step]

Authorized redirect URIs: [add “Redirect URI” data in SMTP Plugin Config from above step]

“Save”, and then click the “Credentials” menu find the “credential name” created from “OAuth 2.0 Client IDs” section, write down the “Client ID” and “Client Secret” under “Additional information”.

add “Client ID” and “Client Secret” to in POST SMTP Mail Plugin Config mentioned above.

OAuth Consent Screen

Add “App name”, “User Supported Email”, “Developer Contact Email”

Add “Authorized Domain”, e.g. if your site is yourdomain.com. then “Authorized Domain” is “yourdomain.com”

Add “Test Users” Email to test this email if app is not published

Submit and “Publish App” if Google Cloud Credentials config is ready to go production.

Test

Following instruction on “send a test Email” to test the Gmail SMTP setup.
